GPFF Regular Season Rules of Play

Regular Season Rules of Play

All games are 51:00 minutes in total. They are broken down into two 25:00- minute halves. Halftime is 1:00

The team that wins coin toss chooses ball or defer. After halftime the opposite team will always start with the ball.

You cannot start the game with the ball and have it after halftime. They are two separate halves so no continuation.

If a game ends in a tie, we will go into overtime. Overtime will consist of each team getting one down to score from the 5-yard line. We will follow the college football overtime format. Captains will meet with the officials at mid field and the away team will call the coin toss. The winning team of the toss will choose ball or defense. If the offense scores, then the defense will have a chance to match. If the score remains tied, then we continue with the defense now having the ball first.

All athletes must have their flag belts on hips, mouthpieces in and shirts tucked in. These will be checked at the opening coin toss by officials and coaches. If a ball carrier has one or both flags missing when she catches the ball or carries the ball then the ball is dead at that spot where she catches or touches it.

We use a 40 second play clock once referee spots the football.

All passes must go over the line of scrimmage. No laterals or pitches of any kind. One foot down in bounds is a completed catch. No diving into the endzone, jumping or leaping into the endzone. You can however dive to pull a flag or to make a catch. Spin moves or the dip are allowed.

No contact of any kind unless it is incidental. No blocking or running alongside of a ball carrier.

Only one athlete in motion at a time. Athletes must be in motion 1 yard behind the line of scrimmage.

3 timeouts per game for each team.

Each team will have 4 downs to cross midfield and 4 downs to score after attaining a first down at midfield.

All divisions except for the pee wee division will have to declare a punt or go for it on 4th down on their side of the field. If a team goes for it and does not get the first down from their side of the field, then the ball is turned over on downs at that spot. Otherwise, the ball will be placed on the opposite 5-yard line. Pee wee divisions will just get the ball at their own 5-yard line if they do not make the first down.

The QB has 7 seconds to throw the ball. The 7 second clock is waived off if the person who receives the snap from center hands the ball off to another player. That athlete can then run or pass with no time commitment.

Blitzing is not permitted in the Pee wee division. All other blitzes are permitted from 7 yards out. Teams can send as many blitzers as they want. If a rusher blitzes early, then she can no longer rush the QB without a penalty. To avoid a penalty, the blitzer who jumped early needs to stay in coverage. If the blitzer doesn’t get back into coverage and the play isn’t blown dead, the offense can accept the 5-yard penalty and replay the down or call off the penalty depending on the result of the play.

Impeding the rusher will apply if an offensive player forces the rusher to change her path while the QB stays in the pocket. If the QB rolls out and the blitzer changes her path, then the impeding penalty is off. However, if an offensive player contacts or gets in the way of the rusher, a blocking penalty may be called. If the play isn’t blown dead, the defense can choose to push the offense back 5 yards and replay the down or call the penalty off depending on the result of the play.

The defense can return an interception on a 1 or 2 point conversion attempt for 1 or 2 points if they cross the offense’s goal line on the interception return.

There are no fumbles. The ball/play is dead as soon as it hits the ground at the spot.

There are no run zones at 5 yards from the first down mark/midfield or 5 yards from end zone. Offenses must pass the ball from these 5-yard distances to convert. For example, if it is 2nd and 5 to the first down mark, the offense on the field must pass the ball to convert to get a first down, they cannot run the ball. If it is 3rd and goal at the 5-yard line, the offense on the field must pass the ball to get a touchdown, they cannot run the ball.

No center sneak play and no contact of any kind to the QB.

The clock will only stop for an official's time out, coach’s time out, or an injury.

Sportsmanship is in play at all times. No foul language, arguing with the officials, taunting or running up the score.

Please see Exhibit 1: Mission Statement & Code of Conduct for details. Footballs cannot be deflated unless your Tom Brady. Please make sure officials check balls prior to gameplay.

Every athlete will play in every game.

They will all line up to shake hands and show good sportsmanship at the conclusion of games. No exceptions.
